Magnetopause boundary layers play an important role in mediating plasma and energy exchange between the solar wind and Earth's magnetosphere. Open questions remain about how boundary layers are affected by strong driving during geomagnetic storms. Recent large storms during the current solar maximum present excellent opportunities for case studies of boundary layers in extreme conditions. These case studies support an ongoing statistical survey of magnetopause boundary layers observed throughout the the MMS mission.
